Gauss computed the algebraic degree of the so-called Gauss sum and his result means that the trace of primitive p-th root of unity exactly generates every subfield of the p-th cyclotomic field. Recently, Daqing Wan tried to generalize Gauss' result in all directions. He computed the degrees of many general exponential sums and asked a question to look for the simple generators of abelian number fields. In this talk, we will discuss the simple generators.

张起帆教授是数论重镇四川大学柯召数论学派的嫡系传人，对于置换多项式深有研究，并培养了一大批青年数论研究人才。
