Lecture Time: September 17, 2023 (Sunday) 16:00-17:30

Venue: Emerald Science and Education Building, Block A, Second Floor, Main Lecture Hall Speaker: Professor Xiangdong Ye

Affiliation:University of Science and Technology of China

Hosted by:School of Mathematics

Abstract:

With the changing times, the scope of mathematical research has become increasingly extensive. Mathematics has various branches, and a current trend in mathematical research is the intersection and integration of multiple branches. In this lecture, we will first introduce the different directions of mathematical research. Then, starting with a classical result from combinatorial number theory, the van der Waerden theorem, we will discuss how combinatorial number theory, algebra, dynamical systems, and harmonic analysis, among other directions, interact with each other, leading to new research results.

Speaker's Profile:

Xiangdong Ye, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, has long been engaged in the research of basic mathematics, specifically in topological dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and their applications. He and his collaborators have conducted in-depth research on structural theorems in dynamical systems, convergence of multiple ergodic averages, entropy theory, the complexity of dynamical systems, and their applications, resulting in a series of profound achievements. Xiangdong Ye received the Chen-Ning Yang Mathematics Award in 2013, the National Natural Science Award (Second Class) in 2018, was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019, received the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award in 2020, and was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World in 2022."
